This assignment supported communities in the Kochi sub-catchment to implement catchment-based and community-driven actions aimed at improving soil and water conservation, riverbank and wetland restoration, tree growing, and community livelihood outcomes. Community mobilisation and sensitisation were key components of the assignment implementation. Sub-catchment and catchment management committees played a major role, and the service provider actively engaged and involved them throughout the implementation process.

Supported community-led catchment actions for soil and water conservation, ecosystem restoration, and improved livelihoods through active local participation.

The Government of Uganda, with funding from the World Bank, implemented the Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP) to support catchment management and restoration activities across selected sub-catchments. These included Lwakhakha in the Mpologoma catchment, Lake Okolitorom and Apeduru Apapai in the Awoja catchment, Kochi in the Albert Nile catchment, and Aswa II in the Aswa catchment. The project supported the implementation of integrated catchment management measures aimed at improving soil and water conservation, restoring ecosystems through riverbank and wetland protection, promoting tree growing initiatives such as afforestation, reforestation, and agroforestry, and enhancing alternative livelihood opportunities for affected communities. Implementation of the IWMDP was fully integrated within existing government structures. The water resources management component was implemented by the Directorate of Water Resources Management (DWRM) through its departments and the relevant Water Management Zones (WMZs), in collaboration with other departments and agencies under the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), as well as other government institutions. Project implementation was supported through contracted service providers. The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), in association with Air Water and Earth (AWE), was engaged as the implementing contractor to support community-based implementation of priority catchment management measures in the Kochi sub-catchment, covering Koboko, Yumbe, and Obongi districts. The contractors worked in close coordination with government structures and local stakeholders to facilitate effective, community-driven catchment management interventions.
